Mango Festival
As the warm, sun-drenched days of summer arrive, a sense of sweet anticipation fills the air across Guam’s villages, each preparing for its annual cultural celebration. Among these, the southern seaside village of Hågat proudly takes center stage, showcasing its signature fruit at the much-anticipated Agat Mango Festival. Hågat, known for its tranquil coastal charm and vibrant community spirit, is a place of breathtaking natural beauty on Guam, where the ocean breeze mingles with the scent of ripening mangoes.
A Culinary Celebration of the Mango
Held annually in the southern seaside village of Hågat, the Agat Mango Festival draws visitors from all corners of the island, eager to indulge in a remarkable array of culinary delights. The festival is a paradise for mango lovers, offering everything from tangy pickled mango and refreshing mango smoothies to delectable mango donuts and rich mango preserves. You might even find innovative creations like mango tarts, mango bread, and mango salsas.
Family Fun and Cultural Immersion
The Agat Mango Festival is a family-friendly event, making it a fabulous weekend outing for those with energetic children ready to embrace their inner explorers. Kids can burn off steam in the numerous games and rides scattered throughout the festival grounds.
For over a decade, since 2006, the Agat Mango Festival has been a cherished annual tradition, typically taking place during the last weekend of May. This popular festival attracts both residents and visitors with its vendor booths, concessions, lively dancing, impressive mango displays and contests, engaging demonstrations, vibrant live music, captivating dance performances, and much more.
Local families cultivate diverse varieties of mango in their yards and ranches, and at the festival, families proudly present a basket of their harvest, showcasing the incredible array of the fruit found on the island. They also submit individual mangoes to compete for prestigious titles like “Most Beautiful Mango,” “Biggest Mango,” and “Most Bizarre.”
In addition to the culinary and entertainment features, the festival is also a fantastic opportunity for artisans, craftsmen, gardeners, and hobbyists to sell their wares and collectibles. Everything from finely crafted knives and swords to delicate handmade earrings are sold by talented local merchants. Local musicians bring their talents to the festival, where they perform either on the main stage or in the shaded courtyard within the community center, filling the air with vibrant island rhythms.
